Head-on Crashes in West Virginia
The outcome of a collision between two vehicles traveling in opposing directions can be catastrophic. These collisions typically occur when drivers turn into oncoming traffic, frequently due to human error or accident. Distraction, carelessness, or unsafe roads are common causes.
In 2021, there were around 5,000 head-on incidents in the US, or 8.9 per 100,000, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT). At 56 percent, head-on collisions had a significantly higher death rate than other accident types, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). You can still get struck head-on in West Virginia’s big cities, although these types of incidents occur more frequently in rural areas and less frequently in cities.
